South of
Nantes, the Vendée is typified by miles of golden sands backed by
forests, tranquil countryside and sleepy villages. Camping La Plage
at St Hilaire-de-Riez is located between the modern resort of St
Jean-de-Monts and the charming fishing port of St
Gilles-Croix-de-Vie. Directly over the road from the campsite
entrance a path leads you through the dunes to the safe golden sands
of a typical Vendéen beach. La Plage is a friendly campsite with a
relaxed and unmistakable French atmosphere so it may be time to hone
those pétanque skills! The first rate swimming complex has a small
indoor pool and whirlpool, an outdoor swimming pool and a slide pool
with excellent water chutes. There are lively bars and a choice of
restaurants just a short walk away. The campsite sells bread,
croissants and milk and for general shopping there is a large
supermarket just a few hundred yards down the road plus some
excellent local markets. For an interesting day out cross over to
the Ile de Noirmoutier, which has beautiful beaches, the Océanile
waterpark and the Sealife aquarium. A little further away is the
excellent Puy de Fou theme park for some Medieval style fun!
